Our House - Home & Family - Te Whare Manaaki Tangata - Child, Youth and Parenting Support Services

A Place to Belong

We operate all our services from a beautiful, heritage-listed building in Waltham, Our House. In synergy with Home & Family, the building has been a part of the Christchurch landscape for over a century. Originally built in 1879 for New Zealand Bank Managers, the home is steeped in history and has passed through many Christchurch families before coming into Home & Family’s ownership in 2024.

How Generosity Gave Us
Our House

We would never have acquired Our House without the incredible generosity of the Christchurch community. In 2014, after losing our original site in the earthquakes, we were gifted the heritage-listed property at 319 St Asaph Street (the original Our House).

We took on the challenge of restoring the building to make it suitable for our work. Thanks to the support of local people and grant funders, we raised over $2 million to transform it into a safe, welcoming space for tamariki and whānau.

St Asaph Street became home to our Child Therapy services and staff offices, while we continued to run our residential parenting programme from Barrington. But by 2024, we knew it was time to bring everyone together under one roof.

That’s when we found our new “Our House”—at 41 Opawa Road.

But the generosity of the Christchurch Community didn’t end there. Thanks to the Rātā Foundation, who empowered the building of our Kōmanawa Children’s Centre and Ministry of Social Development for making the building accessible to all – we were able to create our small haven nestled next to SH74.

And, thanks to local businesses, we were able to create a garden mirroring the oasis found on the inside.
