Diversity & Inclusion - Home & Family - Te Whare Manaaki Tangata - Child, Youth and Parenting Support Services
Celebrating diversity and championing inclusion is at the heart of what we do at Home & Family | Te Whare Manaaki Tangata.

Whether you’re a lifelong supporter, a colleague at a partner agency, or a one-time event volunteer – we are committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Equity Development

In partnership with Tātai Aho Rau Core Education, Home & Family were able to take a deep dive into equity across our organisation. All staff had the opportunity to express their thoughts and feedback through workshops and open, non-judgmental dialogues.

This resulted in the creation of an in-depth equity development plan. Some key changes include:

  • More opportunities for kaimahi to have open and honest discussions, and think critically about their practice
  • Training to create awareness of, and challenge cultural unconscious biases
  • Ensuring everyone feels heard, valued, and respected by encouraging active listening and promoting an understanding of diverse viewpoints
Te Tiriti o Waitangi

We are committed to upholding and honouring the key principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi – partnership, participation, and protection.

While we may not be a kaupapa māori organisation, we recognise the need to partner with such agencies, educate our staff, and adapt our services to meet the needs of our Māori clients.

Best Practice Framework - 'Our House'

Home & Family Practice Framework – affectionately named ‘Our House’ – encompasses Culturally Competent Practice, Family Systems Theory, and Trauma-Informed Practice.

Respecting the mana of tamariki

All our work is child centered. This means we recognise and respect the mana of each child, acknowledging their heritage, and therefore, their whakapapa and the connection (hononga) upheld through whānau engagement.

We support children growing up in a safe environment where they are free to explore their spirituality and mana as they grow.

Working with Pasifika Communities

All staff have received training around working with Pacific peoples in Aotearoa, New Zealand. This training included:

  • Understanding context – know who Pacific peoples are
  • Environment – make time to connect
  • Responsibility – recognise Pacific peoples’ contribution
  • Teu le va – build, nurture and strengthen relationships.
