Family Violence Response - Home & Family - Te Whare Manaaki Tangata - Child, Youth and Parenting Support Services

Home & Family is part of a collaborative effort of Canterbury agencies who respond to family harm callouts across the region.

Responding to approximately 1,000 callouts each year, Home & Family specialises in supporting incidents where children and young people are directly affected by family violence. This includes situations where a young person has initiated violence, or where they have witnessed violence within their home.
Through comprehensive safety planning, our team help tamariki, rangatahi, and their whānau navigate crisis and lay the foundation for a brighter future. But our support doesn’t end there – we continue to walk alongside whānau as trusted advocates, offering guidance, compassion, and stability during the difficult times that follow.

“Home and Family supported my daughter in preparing and delivering her victim impact statement – ensuring that her voice could be heard in the family court proceedings despite the judge was declining to meet with Lily* personally. This was profoundly meaningful. Despite the complexity and emotional toll of the legal processes, their team ensured that her experiences and perspectives were formally documented and presented to the court. This gave my daughter a sense of agency and validation during a time when she had little control over the circumstances affecting her life.”

Safe & Together Model

At Home & Family, we deliver all support using the Safe & Together Model – a world-renowned, evidence-based framework that places the child or young person at the centre of every intervention.

This model ensures that tamariki and their non-offending (‘safe’) parent remain together following incidents of family violence, supporting families to stay intact and move forward with dignity. It recognises and builds on the strengths of the safe parent, empowering them to see and value all they do to protect their child.

Importantly, the model holds perpetrators accountable as parents, challenging the harmful and outdated narrative that the non-offending parent is responsible for the perpetrator’s behaviour. By shifting the focus to safety, accountability, and resilience, Safe & Together helps families heal and thrive.
