What is Safe & Together? - Home & Family - Te Whare Manaaki Tangata - Child, Youth and Parenting Support Services

The Safe & Together™ Model is a framework for practitioners to use when working with families impacted by domestic violence.

The model uses a child-centered approach to support, with the goal of keeping the child and non-perpetrating (protective) parent ‘Safe & Together.’ The model focuses on the strengths of the protective parent, acknowledging all they do to protect their child from harm and minimise negative impacts. At the same time, the model holds the perpetrator accountable for their actions. This shifts the focus of blame from the protective caregiver, to holding the perpetrator accountable as a parent.

The model is relevant across a wide range of professional settings including women and children services, social work, family court, healthcare, mental health and addiction services, government agencies and those involved in child welfare systems.

Why Safe & Together ™?

Home & Family adopted the Safe & Together model in 2021 for a multitude of reasons:

  • Child-centered – in alignment with our vision and principles of our Strategic Plan, the model places the child at its centre.
  • Easy to Implement – we saw an immediate increase in engagement with survivors, children and perpetrators.
  • Shared Language for Practitioners – the model gave our team a greater awareness of the language we used with our clients to create better outcomes.
  • Useful Framework – the framework allows our team to categorise our existing family harm knowledge to work more efficiently.
  • Evidence-Based – Safe & Together has been shown to be effective across countries and cultures. It has been shown to work well with indigenous populations in the US and Australia. Find out more here.
