Trauma Psychology - Home & Family - Te Whare Manaaki Tangata - Child, Youth and Parenting Support Services
Home & Family is one of the only organisations in Canterbury to offer an accessible, trauma-focused psychology intervention for children impacted by family violence.

Using evidence-based, client-led therapies, children impacted by significant trauma are supported to envisage and create a brighter, healthier future. When needed, trauma-focused intervention is often a child’s lifeline to positively engaging in life again.

“There has been a huge positive gain, and their behaviour has been transformed. The girls are attending school, they are less violent, interacting more positively with one another, and the mother is making fewer family harm callouts because of the girls’ behaviour. The girls look forward to their sessions with the Home & Family psychologist, and it’s thanks to the accessibility of the service that they can receive this support.”

What is trauma?

Trauma is the emotional response caused by a single or series of events. It can manifest itself in many ways, such as through mental health, significant distrust in others, or even present as physical symptoms.

When significant trauma has been experienced by tamariki, it becomes difficult for non-clinical, non-specialised treatment to be effective. This is when children are referred to Home & Family’s specialised trauma service. With the appropriate support, children can create a future where they are happy, healthy, and believe in their own worth.

The intervention is delivered by a registered psychologist specialising in child development. All staff at Home & Family are trauma-informed – meaning they can recognise the symptoms of trauma in all clients and refer them when necessary.

At Home & Family, our services work in harmony with one another and we work with all family members at the same time. Our whole-whānau approach means families receive holistic, wraparound support to create positive changes that are long-lasting, sustainable, and felt intergenerationally.
