Volunteer Spotlight: Lulu - Home & Family - Te Whare Manaaki Tangata - Child, Youth and Parenting Support Services

Home & Family regularly takes on students and volunteers to provide them with real‑life experience in the workplace. From social work students to marketing interns, student therapists to administrative volunteers, we support young people to gain valuable skills, knowledge, and experience they can carry with them throughout their careers. By donating their time and energy, they also expand our ability to make an impact and increase the reach of our mahi. We are incredibly grateful for every one of our volunteers.

Lulu, who recently volunteered with Home & Family as part of her Marketing and Communications degree at the University of Canterbury, had this to say about her time with us:

“I feel incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity to volunteer with Home & Family. Their mission—that all tamariki experience a safe and positive childhood—really resonates with me, and it’s been meaningful to be part of work that supports that vision.

My time here has truly opened my eyes. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the challenges some families face, and just how important it is that children are supported to feel safe, secure, and cared for.

What has stood out most to me is the people. The support, care, and genuine sense of family within Home & Family is unmatched. Everyone is so committed and compassionate, and it creates an environment that is both inspiring and uplifting to be part of.

I hope that by giving my time, energy, and willingness to help, I’ve been able to contribute in a small way to the incredible work being done. It’s been a really special experience to be part of something that helps ensure tamariki can grow up with the safe and positive childhood they deserve.”

And you may well see Lulu’s name pop up again. We were so impressed by her enthusiasm, sharp thinking, and willingness to get stuck in, that she is now a part-time member of our staff.
