Our Couples Therapy service provides a safe and supportive space for partners to work through challenges, strengthen communication, and rebuild connection. Guided by experienced therapists, couples are supported to better understand one another and develop healthier ways of relating. Through this service, we aim to help create stronger, more stable foundations for families and relationships.
While there’s a common myth that couples therapy is only for relationships in crisis, in reality, many couples choose to access support before issues become significant. Therapy strengthens communication, helps couples to navigate change and build resilience together. It’s a proactive step that helps relationships grow, not just recover.

“Don’t wait until you are in crisis point before getting help. We were in trouble for years and from the outside our family probably seemed fine. But we weren’t. It is fine to be vulnerable and there is support available.”
Why choose Home & Family?
Home & Family has supported families since 1898 and is one of New Zealand’s oldest charities. In our over 125 years of existence, we have been trusted by Canterbury whānau to deliver safe, compassionate and evidence-based support. Today, to help you make the changes you want as a couple, we can offer you:
- Client‑led Therapy— every relationship is unique, and our therapists work with you to shape sessions around your goals, strengths, and experiences.
- Highly trained and experienced therapists — our team is experienced in multiple therapeutic models, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).
- Choice of therapist — you can choose the therapist who feels right for you; read their bios to find the best fit.
- Trauma‑informed, culturally competent practice — all therapy is delivered using the Home & Family Best Practice Framework, enabling our therapists to recognise when trauma may be influencing behaviour, understand complex family systems, and provide support that is culturally grounded and responsive.
- A safe, welcoming environment — all therapy is delivered from our kōmanawa (oasis), a calm, thoughtfully designed space that helps you feel comfortable, supported, and able to focus on your relationship.
“H&F set up an environment where we both felt listened to and how to be respectful of each other in the space.”
Not only this, by choosing Home & Family, you’re not only supporting your own relationship; every fee is reinvested directly back into our not‑for‑profit services, supporting tamariki, rangatahi, and their whānau through therapy, education, and specialised programmes that create long‑term change for our community.
